Janmashtami Celebration 28th August
Curtin University
12:00 – 14:00
What is Janmastami Janmashtami is the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami is traditionally celebrated by observing a fast throughout the day in commemoration of the challenges and dangers surrounding the birth of Shri Krishna in the prison. The fast is broken at midnight, which is believed to be the time of Shri Krishna's birth. On the day of Janmashtami devotees perform aartis, bhajans, kirtans and dance and drama performances such as Raas Leela and Krishna Leela. The day after Janmashtami is known as Nandotsav or Dahi Handi and on this day devotees celebrate the divine protection and safe arrival of Shri Krishna to his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda. On this day, devotees bathe baby Krishna, offer prayers, share sweets and form pyramids to break a pot of curd (imitating Lord Shri Krishna's most famous childhood activities).    This year Janmashtami will be on the 26th of August. But, Curtin Hindu Club will be bringing to you extended Janmashtami festivities with a Janmastami celebration happening on campus on Wednesday, 28th of August.  Event Information Date: Wednesday, 28th of August 2024 Timings: 12pm to 2pm - a Common Free Time when no classes are scheduled on campus.  Venue: Club HQ (106B) - room located in the Guild Courtyard, next to the Guild Kitchen.  Tickets: the whole event will be free of cost for all.  Donations: The event will be led by ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temple volunteers and prasadam will be provided by Govinda's Hare Krishna Restaurant. Holi is the Hindu festival of colours. It marks the victory of good over evil.  Harmony day is a celebration of our diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all.  Harmony day, celebrated around the same time as Holi, ties in with the Hindu values of equality and love for all living things. The Hindu festival of Holi emphasises that each and every colour is beautiful. Those who have played Holi before would know that when everyone is covered in colour, there is no differentiation of colour, religion, culture, background, age or gender: all are equal. With this vision, we name our event Harmony in Colours.  Who are our Supporters / Partners? This event is organised with the support of Curtin Student Guild, ISKCON (International Society of Krishna Consciousness) and Anantha Australia.  Contact Details To contact us, please email curtinhinduclub@gmail.com.
