Janmashtami Celebration 28th August

Wed, 28 Aug 2024
12:00 - 14:00

What is Janmastami

Janmashtami is the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami is traditionally celebrated by observing a fast throughout the day in commemoration of the challenges and dangers surrounding the birth of Shri Krishna in the prison. The fast is broken at midnight, which is believed to be the time of Shri Krishna's birth. On the day of Janmashtami devotees perform aartis, bhajans, kirtans and dance and drama performances such as Raas Leela and Krishna Leela.

The day after Janmashtami is known as Nandotsav or Dahi Handi and on this day devotees celebrate the divine protection and safe arrival of Shri Krishna to his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda. On this day, devotees bathe baby Krishna, offer prayers, share sweets and form pyramids to break a pot of curd (imitating Lord Shri Krishna's most famous childhood activities).

This year Janmashtami will be on the 26th of August.

But, Curtin Hindu Club will be bringing to you extended Janmashtami festivities with a Janmastami celebration happening on campus on Wednesday, 28th of August
